What is organic cotton?
I print my Queen Bee tea towel on 100% ACO certified organic cotton by Organic Print Studio – but you may be wondering what organic cotton even is? Well, certified organic cotton is grown and processed without the use of synthetic chemicals, fertilisers, or GMO’s. The Australian Certified Organic (ACO) Standard is one of the most respected and rigorous standards in the world for organic production. It can take more than three years for a farm to receive organic certification. Organic production typically requires more human labour, land and cost input than conventional cotton production. Certified organic is a whole systems approach, and is a holistic means of growing and handling. This links the whole system – Soil, Plants, People, Environment – to create a sustainable material.
Care
Gentle cold or hand wash only.
Where is the cotton grown?
The ACO certified organic cotton is grown in India by a company believing in equality, corporate social responsibility and ethical business dealings.
Where are the tea towels printed?
The tea towels are then printed in Melbourne, Australia, by Organic Print Studio, with organic printing standards and dye inks.
Why bees?
Because they’re cute! Bees are currently under threat from underpopulation due to human interference such as use of chemicals and habitat destruction. They are essential to the environment and to humans in many ways, including:
- Pollination: Bees are the world’s most important pollinators, and their work is vital for the survival of ecosystems and food security. Around 90% of the world’s wild flowering plants and more than 75% of the world’s food crops depend on pollination. In Australia, bees are needed for pollination in around 35% of crops.
- Biodiversity: Bees are a key part of biodiversity and are essential for conserving it.
- Food: Bees produce high-quality food such as honey, royal jelly, and pollen.
- Other products: Bees also produce beeswax, propolis, and honey bee venom.
- Inspiration: Bees have inspired innovations in many areas, including structural engineering, medical technology, and computer-based search and optimisation processes.
- Symbolism: Bees are often seen as symbols of community, strength, and wisdom.
